Good Omens, The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch - Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman

This book is a UFO. Its authors are UFOs to start with : two Englishmen, the both of them completely mental, with the same matter-of-fact humor that will have you rolling on the floor in no time. Terry Pratchett is well known for his Discworld Chronicles and his ability to carry on a story while displaying a bizarre mix of absolute cynicism and utter innocence. Neil Gaiman has written some very dreamlike books, in worlds that feel like deforming mirrors of our own. The two of them writing together is like THE perfect scenario for any fantasy fan, the duet we would not have expected to happen except in a very good dream. And though, it happened, and a wonderful book it is, strange and delightful.
It is the story of the Apocalypse. The prophecies have forecast the coming of the Antichrist, and the battle between Hell and Heaven draws near ; soon, the four Horsemen will ride, and the End of the World will come. Next Saturday, in fact, just after tea.
But as Pratchett and Gaiman are geniuses of the absurd, this could not be so simple. It starts with the misplacing of the baby-Antichrist, who ends up in the wrong family. Then there are Crowley the demon and Aziraphale the angel, united in an unlikely friendship and with a growing will to stop or at least postpone the End of the World. There are the four Horsemen, War, Famine, Pollution (Pestilence having retired following the invention of penicillin) and Death, forced to become motorcycle riders for reasons of modernity - the true Hell's Angels. And there is the Book, "the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch", a book that describes in precise detail what is going to happen - so precise it is almost impossible to understand.
This story is cult. It is funny, full of suspense, with great characters, wonderful dialogues and unforeseen chutes. I cannot find a thing to say against it, except maybe that it is too short. And then again, isn't this shortness part of the perfection of it ? You can read it anywhere, at home or on your way to work, in short bouts or on a lengthy reading session. And the authors do reassure you : you don't have to treat the object with reverence. They signed copies in all conditions, including one who was no more than pages in a plastic bag. What I'm trying to say is pretty simple : read it in your bath, read it on a beach, read it walking or standing on your head if you want to.
The important thing is that you do read it. And that's practically a promise : you'll have fun.
