Webcomics

There is currently an extraordinary bloom of webcomics in English, whether they’re daily strips or long-winded story arcs with a multitude of subplots. And all of them are not Tolkien fanfictions.

Webcomics

Let’s start with the daily strips, without a continuous story: One of the oldest webcomics (since 2003) that have survived until today is Dinosaur Comics (www.qwantz.com or www.chewbac.ca ). Everyday, the author, Ryan North, puts exactly the same panels with a different dialogue.

Dinosaur comics deals with every subject possible, from octopuses to determinism, and it's funny and incredibly inventive (imagine inventing a new dialogue each day for... 6 years in a row).

Then there is Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereals, in which Zack Weiner, the author, comes up every day with one gag in a single panel comic. Yeah, that's nearly impossible, but he does it for real! Oh, and the gags are funny, in case you were wondering.

Other excellent daily strips are the now long dead A lesson is learned but damage is irreversible (www.alessonislearned.com) and the recently dead Perry Bible Fellowship (www.pbfcomics.com).

Now, let's see the feuilletons comics, where the story arcs can last for a few months or ... three years.

One of my personal favorite is Dr McNinja (www.drmcninja.com), by Chris Hastings. It's about the adventures of a doctor who is also a ninja (oh really?) and his sidekick Gordito, a Mexican boy who grew out a mustachio with his sheer will. Together they're fighting various things, from giant lumberjacks to Ronald MacDonald through banditos on raptors and the Aztec God of tennis, not to mention the worst of all, the doctor's mom (-"I raised you to be a ninja. You just look like some doctor who got his ass kicked by an old lady." -"Mom, come on... this whole "sneak or fight your way past mom every time you come home" ritual is stupid anyway.").

For more "serious" adventures I'd recommend two comics, Sam and FuzzyScary Go Round (www.samandfuzzy.com) and (www.scarygoround.com). The first, written and drawn by Sam Logan, deals with the never ending problems of a quite average guy named Sam and his psychopathic, devious bear named Fuzzy. The story's impossible to sum up but it's a nice read.

The second one is a British webcomics (quite a rare find) with a strong resemblance to Dr Who (but without a doctor, this time). Plus John Allison revals the real reason why Sarkozy married Carla Bruni (why couldn't we see it before?).

Other good webcomics are Anders Loves Maria (www.anderslovesmaria.com) by Rene Engstrom, a nice romantic story in Sweden (in English), and Over Compensating, "The Journal Comics with a Seething Disdain for Reality" (www.overcompensating.com), by Jeff Rowland.

Have a nice read!
