Chetna Gala Sinha : Biography
An economist, farmer, and activist, Chetna Gala Sinha works for social change in some of the poorest and most drought-stricken areas of rural India. She founded and is currently President of the Mann Deshi Mahila Microfinance Bank and the Mann Vikas Samajik Sanstha NGO, which strive to enhance the economic empowerment and advancement of rural women through savings and lending, education, property rights, and social security initiatives. Through the initiatives of the Bank and the NGO, Chetna has promoted a holistic approach to helping women in rural areas - one that combines economic activity with the educational tools and health care, which are necessary for leading a productive life.
She has been awarded lifetime membership with Ashoka Innovators for the Public, and was selected for the first class of Yale University's World Fellows program in 2002-3. In addition, she has participated in Harvard University's 2003 Bridge Builders' Conference. The Mann Deshi Mahila Bank has also recently won first prize in social sector of the international 2005 Ashoka Changemakers Innovation award, which promotes market-based strategies that benefit low-income communities.
Born in Mumbai, she earned her Masters degree in Commerce and Economics from Mumbai University in 1982. Chetna was a leader in the Jayprakash Narayan student activist movement at the end of the 1970s, which fought for the democratic and basic human rights of the rural and marginalized communities during the Indira Gandhi's Emergency.
Chetna is the mother of three sons and lives in Mhaswad, where Mann Deshi Mahila Bank has its headquarters. Since 1996, she has been organizing women in rural areas of Maharashtra in the fight for their property rights.

Depuis des décennies, Chetna Gala Sinha s'engage pour améliorer les conditions de vie des plus pauvres dans les régions rurales du sous-continent indien. Economiste et activiste, Chetna est avant tout la fondatrice et la Présidente de la Banque de Microfinance pour femmes Mann Deshi Bank et de l'ONG Mann Vikas Samajik Sanstha, dont le but est de combattre la pauvreté de manière globale et transversale. Ces deux institutions œuvrent pour le développement des conditions d'existence des femmes en leur proposant l'accès à l'épargne et au crédit, et en mettant en place des programmes d'éducation, d'accès à la propriété, et de santé.
Son travail a été reconnu et honoré par de nombreuses récompenses: Elle est notamment membre a vie du réseau des entrepreneurs sociaux Ashoka, et a été sélectionnée pour le programme des World Fellows de l'Université de Yale, où elle a enseigné de 2002 à 2003. En 2003, elle a participé à la Conférence Bridge Builder de l'Université de Harvard, et elle a obtenu en 2005 l'Ashoka Changemaker Innovation Award.
Née à Bombay, elle obtient son Master en commerce et en économie en 1982. A la fin des années 1970, elle était une des figures de proue du mouvement étudiant Jayprakesh Narayan, qui luttait pour la démocratie et les droits élémentaires des communautés marginales pendant l'ère Indira Gandhi.
Aujourd'hui, Chetna habite avec sa famille à Mhaswad, un petit village du Maharashtra, au sud de Bombay, où se situe la maison mère de la Mann Deshi Bank. Depuis 1996, elle organise les femmes des régions rurales du Maharashtra dans la lutte pour leurs droits à la propriété.
